I had been playing drums for 2 months. I wasn’t very good but I could play moderately fast and play simple beats in time. This was more than enough to join a pop punk band. I was messaged by the vocalist asking if I was able to come up for a trial band practice, and by the weekend I was on a train at 10 to 8 in the morning, snare drum and cymbals in hand.
I started to play along to their music, and within half an hour I had the job. I say job, over the course of the 9 months I was in the band we made 50 pounds in cash, and got a free T-Shirt each from Two Seasons. We played our first gig at Cavern, and played a few shows in other local venues. I was friends with other people in the Exeter Punk Scene (yes it does exist) and managed to get us support shows with other bands. During a freshers week we played a headline show, charging 3 pound entry. We didn’t receive any of the money from the door for playing, but I was allowed a free pint of coke. We played to roughly 18 people, with 4 of them leaving half way through the set.
I decided to part ways with the band soon after, and fell out with the singer whilst doing so. We eventually made up at a self service checkout at Tesco, but haven’t spoken to each other since.
